History of music promos.

There has been many different music promos’ throughout the years, all with different styles, narratives and other conventions.
This is Bob Dylan’s subterranean homesick blues which was made in the 1960s.
- The changing of the cards is in sync with the lyrics.
-The singer is in the video
- The mise-en-scene is an urban location
-The whole promo is a single shot, making it low budget and basic.

This is The Beatles strawberry fields forever which was made in 1967.
- Various camera shots and angles
- Special effects such as fading
-Some scene’s go backwards
-In colour
-Mostly narrative.
This video has moved on a huge amount from the Bob Dylan video, the piece is in colour which shows the difference in time. It has a much higher budget which is clearly shown due to the amount of props which are used throughout. This would of taken a lot longer to produce due to the variety of shots used making it more interesting than a single shot throughout. There is also a lot more special effects used such as the fading from shot to shot and some parts are reversed which adds a really good effect to the piece. The Beatles are featured in the video and as they were so famous this would have perhaps made it more successful, many close ups of the band were used in the promo also.

MTV was established in 1981 and was hugely successful due to the making of this, music promos became a much bigger thing and more and more artists and bands began to create them.

This is Michael Jackson Thriller which was made in 1982.
-Mise-en-scene was a graveyard
-Costume and make up which is linked to the location adding effect
-A dance routine which is now well known
-Narrative and singing
-The singer is in the video.
-High budget promo
Once again this promo has moved on hugely from both the Bob Dylan and The Beatles promos. Rather than just a narrative there is performance throughout with a dance routine alongside. This is clearly highly budgeted due to the costumes used throughout which would have taken a lot of time to create in make-up. The scene also fits in with the costume making a clear message and helping the narrative make sense. The singer is featured in the video which will make it more successful due to him being so big at the time.
However this is Aerosmith/Run DMC walk this way which was made at the same sort of time but is very somple which a simple location and simple effects. But it works for the genre and the song making it an effective piece.

  1. Emily - you still need to post detailed analyses of 3 promos - this should have been completed by now. Don't get behind as it's tough to catch up. There's some L3 evidence here so far - keep up this level of detail, utilise a range of presentational devices and comment on how far conventions are used.
